A STUDY ON FEMALE STUDENT¢¥S ATTITUDES AND INFLUENTIAL FACTORS ON INFANT FEEDING

Abstract
Breast milk is a complete food and provides all the nutrients needed by the infant in the first few months. It has reported that babies bottle-fed for the first three months of life -were three or four times more likely to die than their brothers or sisters who had been exclusively breastfed.
Breast milk is the best food for a baby in any society. But in the developing world, its -advantages over bottle-feeding can widen to a difference between life and death. In some industrialized countries, there was a steady decline in breast-feeding after the 1930s. However, since the 1970s this trend has reversed and the proportion of mothers who breast-feed appears to be increasing steadily, particularly amongst the younger generation. And one time the incidence of breast-feeding was greater in less privileged groups in these countries
-but now women with higher incomes and -better education show the higher rate. In Korea, the percentage of babies being breastfed has fallen from 90 per cent in 1974 to 70 percent in 1983.
This study attempted to investigate the attitudes and knowledge of female students -concerning infant feeding and to suggest some guidelines for promotion of breast-feeding in Korea.
A 53-item questionnaire was completed by 576 high school and university students in
Seoul. Chi-squares tests are conducted for data analysis and the results are as follows:
1. Only half of the students are willing to breastfeed their babies after marriage. Majority
of the student think breastfeeding is ideal feeding method for the infant during the first
one month after delivery due to lack of knowledge on breast milk.
